Previous entry "Kievan Rus - Winning" lists the three things needed to achieve a military victory: research; troops & economy (gold). Of these three, research is the easiest to explain.
To the left of your state emblem eg. 🔱 are 3 buttons (mobile), three lines uppermost (list of credits); middle = research & lower = shortcut to in-game purchases. Research is divided into 4 categories: Economy; Warfare; Diplomacy & Colonization. There are several researches in each category.
While research won't achieve a military victory alone, having strong troops lowers troop losses significantly. This in turn reduces troop replacements ---> lowers costs. To ignore research completely though is to severely hamstring your efforts.
Once the research has started, you only need to wait the allotted time period or spend gems as a speedup. Spending gems is Premium Currency. To get gems you can spend US$??.00 or watch ads (as I did). Premium Currency covered as an entry on its own.
